Renzo Piano, at Our 18th Annual Meeting

“Peace is like a city. We have to build it together, brick by brick.”

At our Annual Meeting in Milan, we were lucky enough to be joined by Renzo Piano, an architect whose most notable projects include the Shard in London, the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and most recently, our Centre of Excellence in Paediatric Surgery in Entebbe, Uganda, which will open its doors in 2020.

“EMERGENCY’s building in Uganda is scandalously beautiful,” he told us, “because it combines so many new ideas. Why are people afraid of new ideas? I’ve always been afraid of old ones.”

“Building something is an extraordinary act of solidarity and peace – as long as you don’t build a wall.”
