“It’s in what seem like the darkest places that we find the light.”
Inspiring words from Lyse Doucet, Chief International Correspondent for the BBC, who joined us at our Annual Meeting in Milan with a message of hope.
Lyse spoke about “the special, special work that EMERGENCY does” for our patients, like those we’ve treated at our Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Centre in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq: “EMERGENCY gave them hope. It fixed their legs, it fixed their arms, it allowed them to go back into the world.”
It was an opportunity to reflect on the importance of what we do: “We don’t just walk in the margins of history – sometimes we walk in the middle of it.”
As a journalist, Lyse has dedicated her life to showing people the impact of war on human beings: “When you get to the heart of them, these stories are no different from the stories of you or I. They’re stories about all of us.”
