The Randal Charitable Foundation and EMERGENCY UK Celebrate their First Year of Impact

The Randal Charitable Foundation and EMERGENCY UK are celebrating the significant impact made during the first year of their strategic partnership.

Funding from the Foundation supported EMERGENCY’s hospitals in Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and Uganda, which together provided healthcare services for more than 110,000 people – the equivalent of more than one life impacted every five minutes.

As shrinking foreign aid budgets fail to meet the reality of over 240 million people with humanitarian needs worldwide, the lifesaving role of philanthropy is only growing in the aid sector. Innovative partnerships like this one are helping to forge a new path for maximising impact in some of the most vulnerable communities worldwide.

Dr Nik Kotecha OBE DL, Chairman and Founder of the Randal Charitable Foundation, who has also taken on a key ambassadorial role for EMERGENCY UK, said, “We are pleased to support EMERGENCY UK with their vital work in Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and Uganda to provide vital healthcare to those most in need. EMERGENCY UK’s work aligns closely with the Randal Foundations mission and provides crucial maternal, neonatal, paediatric and surgical care to vulnerable communities affected by conflict.”

“Our interventions aren’t dictated by the headlines,” says EMERGENCY’s President Rossella Miccio. “We construct facilities, run accredited training and residency programmes, and over 95% of staff in our hospitals and clinics are local people: this is both practical and sustainable health system strengthening. Support from likeminded organisations like the Randal Charitable Foundation ensures that this impact will be felt for generations.”

Generous funding from the Randal Foundation included £500,000 supporting pharmaceutical and medical consumables at EMERGENCY’s facilities: materials critical for providing uninterrupted, free-of-charge care to vulnerable communities.

Dejan Panic, EMERGENCY’s Country Director in Afghanistan, reflects on the impact the partnership is making: “I want to extend my thanks to The Randal Foundation for their incredibly generous support. There is such an enormous need for free, quality care in Afghanistan. EMERGENCY’s facilities have been here to provide essential, life-saving services for over 25 years. With the help of brilliant partnerships like the one between The Randal Foundation and EMERGENCY UK, we can continue to make a huge impact helping to provide quality healthcare to the Afghan people, both for today and for the long-term.”

With successful events and the ongoing advocacy of Dr Nik Kotecha, awareness and fundraising efforts in the UK are continuing to strengthen.

Together, we…

  • Celebrated our partnership at a special summit in Milan, where EMERGENCY’s international humanitarian projects are coordinated;
  • Held public events like the UK premiere of a documentary about EMERGENCY’s work in Afghanistan;
  • Jointly attended global conferences to highlight the impact of our innovative partnership.

“After a fantastic first year for our strategic partnership with the Randal Charitable Foundation, we’re looking ahead with anticipation as we continue to help save and improve tens of thousands of lives,” says David Lloyd Webber, Managing Director of EMERGENCY UK. “At the same time, the invaluable advocacy of Dr Kotecha is supporting our growth here in the UK, from new events and collaborations to the relationships we are forging together. We look forward to driving greater awareness of EMERGENCY’s work in the UK, and deepening our impact worldwide.”

The Randal Foundation has committed a further £500,000 of funding in year two, with both organisations seeing their partnership’s ability to power lifesaving work at scale.
