Iraq: We’ve Spent Decades..
We’ve spent decades treating the victims of explosive weapons and, from the very beginning, fought against the use of landmines.
Entire countries are still covered with anti-personnel mines, ready to explode at any moment. Often, children mistake them for toys, with tragic consequences.
In 1998, we opened our Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Centre in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq – a country in which mines have killed over 6,000 people in the last 25 years. Many of our patients have fallen victim to a landmine and lost an arm or a leg.
We take their measurements, produce and fit a prosthesis, provide physiotherapy to help them accustom themselves to the new limb, and even offer vocational training to help them reintegrate back into society.
