Iraq: Just Like Any Other Girl

Two years ago, a bomb destroyed the roof of her house, killed her cousin, and seriously injured one of her brothers.

She also lost part of her right leg in the explosion. Last week, we admitted her to our Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Centre in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq.

She arrived with her mum and younger brother, who are staying in a guest room reserved for patients’ families. Her dad never misses an opportunity to come and visit, to see how his daughter is doing with the new prosthesis we made her. “I want to play again, without using those,” she says, eyeing the pair of crutches leaning against the wall.

Sidra is nine years old, she lives in Mosul, Iraq, and we think she should be able to run around and play, just like any other girl her age.
