Afghanistan: Fighting In Ghazni, EMERGENCY Requests That The Civilian Population Is Respected And The Opening Of A Safe Passage

On Friday morning, fighting began to engulf Ghazni, a city of 280,000 people 3 hours’ drive away from Kabul.

Since Saturday, there has been no electricity and telephone communications are interrupted. Even water has begun to run low.

The fighting has blocked main access roads and is preventing the escape of the civilian population, who are now trapped in the city.

Only those living in the outermost areas managed to leave Ghazni, moving on foot towards the city of Wardak.

“The EMERGENCY hospital in Kabul received 20 injured patients on Saturday, but we fear that most of them are trapped in Ghazni and cannot receive any help“, says Dejan Panic, EMERGENCY’s Programme Coordinator in Afghanistan.

“EMERGENCY has a First Aid Post in the city that has received an increasing number of injured patients in recent years, but we have not yet managed to talk to our colleagues today“.

EMERGENCY requests that the civilian population is respected, and that a corridor for the safe passage of those injured is opened so that they may leave the city and receive the assistance they need.
