Sudan: EMERGENCY Celebrates Ten Years of the Salam Centre

Ten years ago, we opened the Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery in Khartoum, Sudan. It was the first completely free-of-charge cardiac surgery centre in Africa, and some people did not understand our reasons: “Why spend so much on highly specialised care when you can die from simple diarrhoea in Africa?” Ten years later, we are proud of the path we chose: we treated patients who otherwise would have had no other opportunity to be treated, and we chose to assert the idea that the right to high-quality healthcare belongs to every human being.

Thanks to all of you who made this project possible.
