World Refugee Day 2019
The Geneva Convention defines a ‘refugee’ as someone who, due to persecution or fear of persecution on the basis of race, religion, citizenship, social background or political opinions, must leave their own country and seek protection in another.
For us, a refugee is someone who has left behind their family, their home, their safety and their past, and is forced to start again from scratch. But they have the right to start again, because everyone is entitled to dignity and the hope of a better life. And wherever they may escape to, every individual has the right to be listened to and protected. Not turned away, abused, ignored or exploited, but protected.
