Sudan: “I am Just So Happy – and So Grateful”

Do you remember Peace?

She’s a little girl from Nigeria who, last November, underwent an operation at the Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery in Khartoum, Sudan, to treat a congenital heart defect. On the right is Juha, the cardiac surgeon who successfully performed the operation. As you can see, it was smiles all round when she was discharged.

This week we caught up with Peace in Lagos, Nigeria, where EMERGENCY’s screening team has been providing follow-ups and medicines to former patients – part of our commitment to lifelong treatment – as well as identifying new patients in need of heart surgery.

Her mother Miriam told us that Peace was able to return to school after the operation, to the delight of her friends, and has even taken up dancing lessons.

“This time last year, I never would have imagined that this would be possible,” Miriam told us. “I’m just so happy – and so grateful.”
