Our 2022.

Over the past year, the world has been confronted with violence. From wars to natural disasters, from the mountains of Afghanistan to the waters of the Mediterranean, there is harm that needs healing. This is the reality in which EMERGENCY works: our mandate to provide free, high-quality care around the world has led us to treat, year after year, over 12 million people. 

To all of our supporters around the world—every colleague, volunteer, and friend—thank you. Thank you for choosing peace, human rights and healing. Without you, we could not continue to do this crucial work. 

Here are just a few of the things you helped us accomplish in 2022:

Despite the worsening humanitarian and economic crises, we have never abandoned the people of Afghanistan. In June, we assisted in the wake of a devastating earthquake by opening a clinic in Barmal and treating more than 4,500 people. Throughout the year, our First Aid Posts and the 24/7 ambulance network connecting them allowed us to reach Afghans who would be otherwise unable to access care. And, in May, we celebrated the opening ceremony of this year’s Residency School, where Afghan residents practising in our hospitals can pursue specialisations. This is part of our commitment to training local colleagues in order to strengthen and increase the long-term sustainability of the local health systems. 

The Sulaymaniyah Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Centre in Iraq celebrated its 24th anniversary in February. Since its establishment, the Centre has treated more than 12,000 patients and provided over 17,400 prostheses. 

In Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation recognised our Goderich Surgical Centre as the ‘Best Performing Medical Emergency Response Team’ for supporting the country through the most challenging of times, including the Ebola and COVID-19 outbreaks. 

We launched a new project in 2022: in December, our maritime search and rescue ship Life Support set sail on its first mission, rescuing 142 people during two night-time operations in the Central Mediterranean Sea. 

10,000: the number of surgical interventions our Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery in Khartoum has performed since opening in 2007. And, we continued to develop our Regional Cardiac Surgery Programme, conducting the 13th cardiology screening mission in Eritrea since October 2019, and the very first mission in Mogadishu. 

In May, we celebrated the first anniversary of our Children’s Surgical Hospital in Entebbe. At the same time, we organised a meeting with the health authorities of 12 African countries to discuss the African Network of Medical Excellence (ANME). The conference focused on strengthening the health systems of the continent, creating a common strategy to respond to the health problems of the area and extending a health model of excellence beyond the first two centres in Sudan and Uganda. 

Our Mobile Health Clinics provide socio-medical care for refugees, migrants and other vulnerable members of the population in cities across Italy and, in March, a Mobile Clinic called the Politruck reached the Moldovan city of Balti, home to three refugee centres, where we supported people fleeing war with primary healthcare assistance and psychological support.
