International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2022

On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we want to share Stara’s story:

“I stepped on the mine, it exploded, and everything went dark… screams around me, blood everywhere, I woke up in the hospital and I found myself without a leg.”

This is how many lives, like Stara’s, take an abrupt turn in Iraq and other countries facing the scourge of landmines and unexploded ordnance.

Stara received her prosthesis at EMERGENCY’s Rehabilitation Centre in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq, where professionals like Shady, Burhan, and Shadman support her through physiotherapy, exercises, and adapting her prosthesis. “By providing prostheses, I help people who lost a limb to continue their lives,” says Shadman, Orthopaedics Coordinator.

“When my brother took me to the Centre, I received my prosthesis,” Stara continues. “Although it was difficult at first, I managed to get my life back. I want to thank all the staff here for that.”

Today and every day, EMERGENCY reaffirms its support for persons with disabilities by providing free, high-quality healthcare. #IDPwD
