EMERGENCY’s Collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons
The Royal College of Surgeons of England is one of the world’s most renowned and prestigious institutions dedicated to advancing surgical care. On 9 and 10 October, EMERGENCY collaborated with the College across two events.
At a special screening of Lynzy Billing’s documentary Long Night, the audience were transported to EMERGENCY’s hospitals across Afghanistan, where trained Afghan surgical teams have been delivering free, high-quality care since 1999.
Dr Azim Shahir, EMERGENCY’s Chief Surgeon in Kabul, joined us online for a Q&A after the screening alongside Dr Khesrow Sangarwal, Chair of AAHP-UK, EMERGENCY’s Medical Director Dr Gina Portella, and filmmaker Lynzy Billing, moderated by Dorothy Kufeji MBA.

And at the annual Global Surgical Frontiers Conference, Medical Director Dr Gina Portella drew on EMERGENCY’s 25+ years of experience in Afghanistan and Sudan to speak about the provision of excellent surgical care during peacetime, at the height of conflict, and in the aftermath of war.

Surrounded by medical professionals and others dedicated to improving global surgical access, EMERGENCY’s central tenets were reaffirmed: high-quality surgical care can and should be available to anyone who needs it, everywhere in the world.
