From Afghanistan to Sudan, looking back at 2024.

Gaza: “It already feels apocalyptic.”
“The latest bombings in Gaza struck people at their most vulnerable moment: whilst they were sleeping. With the roar of the explosions, the windows of our compound literally burst open. Nobody saw it coming, there was no warning.”
Even now, the attacks continue, albeit with less intensity. Giorgio Monti, our Medical Coordinator, reports on recent events in Gaza.
“Gaza already felt apocalyptic. It has been almost completely razed to the ground. If this marks the resumption of war, it will be extremely difficult. The situation was always challenging, but at least there was hope that the continuous bombing had stopped.
Since we entered Gaza last August, day after day we have witnessed the population become even more exhausted. We don’t know how long the military operations will go on, but the risk is that, after many returned north, there will be new mass displacements to the south.
We are eager to get back to work. We are here to help those in need.”
EMERGENCY’s activities in Gaza
Our team entered Gaza in August 2024 and currently works in our Primary Healthcare Clinic in al-Qarara, Khan Younis, within the so-called ‘humanitarian zone.’
Here, we provide first aid, basic medical and surgical care for both adults and children, outpatient reproductive health activities, post-operative nursing care, stabilisation of medical and surgical emergencies, and transfers to other hospital facilities.
We also continue to offer primary healthcare at an outpatient clinic set up by the local organisation Creative & Free Thought Association (CFTA) in al-Mawasi, also within the ‘humanitarian zone.’
Only 60% of hospitals in the Gaza Strip remain partially functional, and just 48% of primary healthcare clinics. Since October 2023, more than 48,000 people have died and over 111,000 have been injured, while nearly two million people are displaced. Almost 70% of all the buildings in Gaza have been destroyed.
