Looking Back at 2024

Since 1994, EMERGENCY has addressed the consequences of conflict and poverty, with the hope that we would one day no longer be needed. 30 years later, our work around the world remains as necessary as ever.

In 2024, in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine, EMERGENCY’s teams provided healthcare in the midst of active conflict. Primary care services, paediatric consultations and community health activities represent just some of the ways we are working to support local populations and strengthen healthcare networks in crisis settings.

Elsewhere, we continued to treat the legacy of war.

In Iraq, we provided rehabilitation, prosthetics and long-term support to disabled people, while in Afghanistan, our network of hospitals and clinics remained an essential service for the country, even as surgical needs have gradually shifted toward civilian trauma. And in the Panjshir valley, our Maternity Centre supported the next generation, delivering approximately 600 newborns every single month.

Personal experiences of war and conflict were frequently shared by those on board EMERGENCY’s search and rescue ship, Life Support. Our teams rescued 1,374 people from boats in distress in the central Mediterranean, which remained one of the world’s deadliest migration routes.

Throughout Italy, our clinics and teams provided thousands of refugees, migrants and other people in vulnerable positions with essential medical care and social assistance.

Meanwhile, the Children’s Surgical Hospital in Uganda continued at full capacity, providing free paediatric surgeries that would often otherwise be financially devastating for a family. As part of the Regional Programme, several children have been referred from our Surgical Centre in Sierra Leone, where we remain the country’s main referral hospital for traumatology.

To all our volunteers, supporters and colleagues around the world, thank you. It is only because of your solidarity and action that we are able to put our beliefs into practice, every day.

In 2025, let’s keep working toward that ultimate goal: a peaceful world, where healthcare is free and accessible for all.
