International Women’s Day 2023

On International Women’s Day, we want to share a story about two colleagues from our Anabah Maternity Centre who share a name and a purpose: to help the women of Afghanistan.

Najila has been Midwife at the hospital for 5 years. At just 25 years old, she is already one of our shift leaders, acting as Head Midwife on night shifts.

Dr Najila, 36, is a Gynaecologist at Anabah. Before she started working here, she was a nurse in the Outpatients Department at our Kabul Surgical Hospital for 7 years.

In a country where the maternal mortality rate is one of the highest in the world, the dedication and care patients receive from colleagues like these two women is critical. In 2022, our team in Anabah conducted over 23,450 outpatient consultations and delivered 5,466 babies.

When you ask if she is tired, Najila the Midwife replies: “You are never too tired to help people.”

To all of our women colleagues in Afghanistan and around the world: thank you.
