A Network of More than 40 Facilities
We opened the first in Gulbahar, 70 kilometres north of Kabul, at the end of 1999. The most recent began work just a few weeks ago in Dayek, in the rocky Salang district of Parwan province.
These are our First Aid Posts and Primary Healthcare Centres in Afghanistan: a network of more than 40 facilities that ensure access to treatment for communities living in isolated areas which are difficult to reach or have no other healthcare facilities.
They are all linked to our major hospitals in Kabul, Lashkar-Gah and Anabah by a 24/7 ambulance service.
In the rural heartlands of Afghanistan, these clinics are a lifeline for extremely poor communities isolated from all essential services.
In 21 years, our clinics have provided over 5 million outpatient visits and more than 120,000 ambulance transfers.
In ‘Afghanistan20’ we tell the story of the birth, expansion and consolidation of EMERGENCY’s network of First Aid Posts and Primary Healthcare Centres in Afghanistan through testimonies, numbers and stories. A multimedia project that we published last October to recount 20 years of war in the country from the point of view of the victims and those treating them.
